ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Alko is a nationwide network of liquor stores with virtual monopoly to sell alcohol. Beer and ciders are sold also in grocery stores. The Alko stores are open, depending on the store, from Monday to Friday 9 am - 8 pm, on Saturdays 9 am - 6 pm. All stores are closed on Sundays, religious feast days, on Christmas Eve and Easter Saturday.

ARCHITECTURE

Jyväskylä's favourite son, the architect Alvar Aalto, is widely regarded as one of the great innovators in western architecture. The Alvar Aalto Museum and the numerous buildings designed by Aalto constantly bring to Jyväskylä professionals and amateurs in the field of architecture from all over the world.

Banks are normally open from Monday to Friday 10 am - 16:30 pm. Some banks have longer opening hours. Bank machines have an extensive network, also in locations with no other banking services.

CRUISING ON THE LAKES

Lake traffic is maintained by comfortable lake steamers and motor vessels. In Central Finland there is a wide choice of routes and cruises. The cruise can be a few hours' pleasure excursion or a one-day excursion in Lake Päijänne. Among the most popular routes are the excursions of Elias Lönnrot between Keuruu and Mänttä and a cruise between Jyväskylä and Lahti on Lake Päijänne.
Cruises along the Keitele-Päijänne Canal take visitors from Jyväskylä northwards to Laukaa and Suolahti.

POST OFFICE

Post offices are usually open from Monday to Friday 9 am - 6 pm. Jyväskylä Main Post Office open Mon-Fri 8-20. Yellow mail boxes (standing on the ground) for collections daily. Stamps are available at Post Offices, book and paper shops, R-kiosks, stations, hotels.

SAUNA

The tourist can enjoy a sauna at most hotels, motels, holiday villages and camping sites, where there are separate saunas for men and women. Some hotel saunas are also open to non-residents.

SHOPS

Retail shops are allowed to be open from Monday to Friday 7 am - 9 pm and on Saturdays 7 am - 6 pm. Smaller grocery stores may be open also on Sundays 12 am - 9 pm. Other retail outlets may be open on Sundays in May, June, July and August and also in November and December 12 am - 9 pm. At other times they are closed on Sundays.

Taxis can be obtained by telephone (see telephone directory under Taksi) or from taxi ranks. All taxis have an illuminated yellow sign taksi/taxi. When the sign is lit the taxi is vacant.
