ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Alko is a nationwide network of liquor stores with virtual monopoly to sell alcohol. Beer and ciders are sold also in grocery stores. The Alko stores are open, depending on the store, from Monday to Friday 9 am - 8 pm, on Saturdays 9 am - 6 pm. All stores are closed on Sundays, religious feast days, on Christmas Eve and Easter Saturday.
 
ARCHITECTURE

Jyväskylä's favourite son, the architect Alvar Aalto, is widely regarded as one of the great innovators in western architecture. The Alvar Aalto Museum and the numerous buildings designed by Aalto constantly bring to Jyväskylä professionals and amateurs in the field of architecture from all over the world.
 
BANKS

Banks are normally open from Monday to Friday 10 am - 16:30 pm. Some banks have longer opening hours. Bank machines have an extensive network, also in locations with no other banking services.
 
BUS SERVICE

In the Jyväskylä region you can travel by local busses by using an ordinary tickets or Jyväskylä Travel Card. Jyväskylä Card entitles the holder to free travel on Jyväskylä Liikenne's busses. For further information please contact Jyväskylä Regional Tourist Information.
 
CHANGING MONEY

Foreign currencyh can be changed at banks Mon-Fri 10-16.30. Credit cards (Visa, Eurocard, Mastercard, Cirrus, EC) can be used to withdraw cash from cash dispencer with SOLO symbol.
 
CRUISING ON THE LAKES

Lake traffic is maintained by comfortable lake steamers and motor vessels. In Central Finland there is a wide choice of routes and cruises. The cruise can be a few hours' pleasure excursion or a one-day excursion in Lake Päijänne. Among the most popular routes are the excursions of Elias Lönnrot between Keuruu and Mänttä and a cruise between Jyväskylä and Lahti on Lake Päijänne.
Cruises along the Keitele-Päijänne Canal take visitors from Jyväskylä northwards to Laukaa and Suolahti and on as far as Viitasaari.

Everyman's rights is a concept prevailing in Finland and other Nordic countries. Basically it entitles us to go where we please in the countryside - on land or on water - as long as we don't intrude on people's privacy, cause a nuisance or damage, or leave litter.

The most common opening hours are 9.00 to 20.00 on weekdays and 9.00 to 15.00 on Saturdays.

PASSPORT

Persons arriving in Finland from the Nordic Countries and EU countries do not need a passport, however some identification, e.g. an identity card, is required when entering Finland. Persons arriving from other countries should contact the Finnish embassy in their home country for detailed information.
 
PETROL STATIONS

Service stations are usually open from 7.00 to 21.00, and for a shorter time on Sundays. Many stations offer 24-hour sales petrol and many of them have cafés.
 
PHARMACIES

Medicines are sold at pharmacies (apteekki). Note that chemists (kemikaalio) only sell cosmetics.
 
POST OFFICE

Post offices are usually open from Monday to Friday 9 am - 6 pm. Jyväskylä Main Post Office open Mon-Fri 8-20. Yellow mail boxes (standing on the ground) for collections daily. Stamps are available at Post Offices, book and paper shops, R-kiosks, stations, hotels.
 
SAUNA

The tourist can enjoy a sauna at most hotels, motels, holiday villages and camping sites, where there are separate saunas for men and women. Some hotel saunas are also open to non-residents.
Muurame Sauna Village provides a unique overview of the sauna tradition in Finland. The area contains 30 smoke saunas from various parts of the country as well as a magnificent exhibition of sauna culture. Open 1.6-27.8. Tue-Sun 10-18, admission 4 €.
 
SHOPS

Retail shops are allowed to be open from Monday to Friday 7 am - 9 pm and on Saturdays 7 am - 6 pm. Smaller grocery stores may be open also on Sundays 12 am - 9 pm. Other retail outlets may be open on Sundays in May, June, July and August and also in November and December 12 am - 9 pm. At other times they are closed on Sundays.
 
TAXIS

Taxis can be obtained by telephone (see telephone directory under Taksi) or from taxi ranks. All taxis have an illuminated yellow sign taksi/taxi. When the sign is lit the taxi is vacant.

Time in Finland is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
 
TIPPING

Tips are not expected in Finland at restaurants, cafés coffee bars because service is included in the price.

Passenger trains in Finland have at their disposal 4000 km of tracks. The network interconnects the major Finnish cities. The most important sections of line are electrified.
The fastest train connection between Helsinki and Jyväkylä takes 3 h 04 min.
